A scarce opportunity to acquire an original painting by Watanabe Seitei (1851 – 1918). This painting typifies the best of Seitei’s work and one can imagine this recreated by the cloisonne artist Namikawa Sosuke who often used this fine artist’s works as inspiration for his own. Watanabe Seitei (also pronounced Shtei) was born in the heart of Edo, in the Kanda district. As a youth he apprenticed as a merchant, but when he proved to have no business sense, he studied painting with Kikuchi Ysai, a renowned master of history painting. In 1876, he toured Europe to gain exposure to Western painting, and on his return won acclaim for his unique blend of closely observed nature and elegantly designed compositions. One of his paintings won an award at the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris, which encouraged him to travel there; he stayed on for three years, studying Western watercolor technique. His paintings reveal a close examination of nature and a delicacy of brushwork. His designs are well known through the work of cloisonné enamel artist Namikawa Sosuke who recreated som of his works in enamels including some of the famous panels created for the Asakusa Palace, part of the Emperor’s residence in Tokyo. His paintings are to be found today in the collections of the following museums or collections – Institute of Art in Chicago, Brussels Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Art in Boston, Tokyo Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo National Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Ashmolean Museum, Fogg Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. 53cm x 196 cm (scroll) 41cm x 105 cm (painting).
