An exquisite early 20th century Meiji Japanese watercolor painting signed by listed artist Masano Kawakubu signed M. Measuring 12 by 18 inches in a period dark wood with gilt edge 15.5 by 21.75 frame. Depicts a temple with monk in front, possibly in Karafuto Japan, based on the three lobed prefecture flag. Overall very good shape, possibly with minor soiling to sky. I have not removed from the frame and I think the soiling is on the reverse of the glass only. A very rare item to the market, we are pleased to present this wonderful Japanese Room Divider. The frame is Japanese Black lacquer. There is a wide border of beige pure silk with white blossom flowers. This has a narrow guard border of gold silk. The background to the screens is qilt paint. An extravagant scene of cranes then spreads across the panels. Everything is hand-painted and executed, the painted panels are on paper. The divider is bakced by plain blue paper. We feel these faults could be professionally restored if needed. There are some examples in the last pictures of some punctures and tears to the paper. This does not have a big impact on the beauty of the screen. There are areas where there has possibly been previous repair. There are minor puncture marks and scrapes.
