Large Japanese Antique Imari Porcelain Vase and Cover Hand Painted 19th C
A beautifully hand painted, highly decorative and collectable antique Japanese Imari export porcelain vase and cover dating from the 19th century. The vase is of a tapering ovoid or wine jar shape with a high domed flanged lid that has a flame shaped or temple top finial. The vase and cover have each been painted in peach and iron red enamels with profuse gilding over an under-glaze blue structural ground. The main design is painted with two large stylised lotus petal shaped panels or cartouches. These cartouches each have a basket or dish with a bonsai sized flowering peach blossom and chrysanthemum flowers. The space between the cartouches is filled with a stylised lozenge floral motif or mon, surrounded with flowers and butterflies. The shoulder on the vase and cover are each decorated with a scrolling peony flower design. The base has a border of stylised lotus petal panels. The base of the vase is unmarked but, Imari ware or Imari yaki. Was traditionally made around Arita in the former Hizen Province, (now the Saga prefecture) of North western Kyushu, in Japan. Some collectors may refer to this vase and cover as a temple jar or lidded jar. It is in excellent antique condition. There is some wear to the gilding. There are no chips cracks nor restoration, there are some small firing tears to the vase foot rim from manufacture. Please see the images. This is a highly collectable and very decorative item and great for display on its own as a statement piece or as part of a collection antique Japanese, Oriental porcelain or Imari-yaki.
