Buddhist Deity on Hanging Scroll with Hand Paint Antique for Museum Collection
Unique Japanese Tokugawa period Hanging Scroll with Buddhist Deity, Hand Paint Antique. This deity was considered to protect from illness and evil influences, especially from the so-called Three Corpses (sanshi)dwelling in the body of human beings. Size: 19 inches (about 50 centimeters) wide. It comes with a new wooden box made of hinoki cypress tree to protect this treasure (see the last photo). This exceptional piece is worth being displayed in a museum. It seems to represent Shmen Kong yasha my , the blue-faced king of the yakas, protector of Buddhism. We know that it is Japanese because of the representation of Prince Shtoku (or an imitation of him) holding an incense burner on the left side, with a similar figure on the right side. The name of this deity is literally translated as Blue-faced Vajra , and is known in China as QingmiĆ n jngng. This Tantric deity is considered one of the five Yakas, this one being the protector of Buddhism associated with the Eastern direction. In Japan, after the introduction of related rituals by the Tendai school, this particular representation became associated with the popular cult of the Daoist deity Kshin Ch.
