Antique Chinese Paintings and Scrolls. The earliest antique Chinese paintings date from the late 4th century and are a favorite among collectors. The paintings often portray landscapes, flowers, or scenes from nature, and are rolled around wooden spools rather than continuously hung up for viewing. The artists sign their creations by stamping it with their name in Chinese characters in red ink. What is scroll art? Scroll painting is an art form practiced mainly in East Asia. There are two dominant forms: Chinese landscapes and Japanese pictorial storytelling art. The picture is generally painted on a long strip of silk or paper that is 10 to 15 inches long and up to 30 feet wide. It is meant to be viewed be unscrolling a two-feet section at a time. Chinese paintings are also made as narrow vertical scrolls for hanging on a wall. How do you hang a Chinese scroll painting? You can hang a long narrow painting by simply mounting a picture hanging hook, wall J-hook, or even a map tack on the wall at the appropriate height. The Chinese scroll can then be hung by its cord at the top. Be aware that the J-hook adhesive can leave an imprint that lightens your wall color after removal. Be sure that the cord and upper bracing are secure. How do you read a Chinese scroll painting? Very often the paintings will be accompanied by Chinese calligraphy brushed onto the white space of the painting. This is a poem by the artist complementing the landscape or picture. Ideally, you should obtain a translation of the calligraphy. How do you view a scroll painting? A Chinese handscroll is a long horizontal strip of distinct scenes that are meant to be viewed from right to left while rolling and unrolling the scroll so that only two feet are visible at one time. Its similar to scenes along a journey or illustrated chapters of a story. The scroll is kept rolled up and stored carefully when not viewed. How do you mount and hang Chinese silk paintings? Chinese silk paintings can be mounted and framed for display on a wall. If the painting is only on rice paper, it should first be mounted on a backing of silk brocade. If its already on an existing scroll, the scroll ends of the silk brocade can be cut off and the entire painting framed under UV protective glass to protect any fragile paints or inks. Its relatively easy to hang a Chinese wall scroll painting, which needs only a hook to support the cord at the top. A horizontal Chinese painting, if not too wide, can be unrolled, mounted, framed, and hung like a traditional Western framed work of art. Please be noticed that the book’s cover could be either dark coffee color or light yellow color, due to different batches by the publishers. All the contents are the same in all the books. The puerh cake in the picture is a 100g one, for size comparison and is not included in the sale. The best yixing art book ever! A book dominated by pictures and doesn’t require any language proficiency! It’s probably the best Yixing book ever, and the Yixing art works showed in this book are probably the best you would find in a book. It’s a book in Chinese. But I would like to introduce this book to Yixing fans in any country because this book has very little text and primarily composed of pictures. Basically you don’t have to “read” to “watch” this book. Typical pages of the book are as showed by the last 4 pictures of this listing. They are dominated by photographs of yixing art works, with little to none text. The pages such as the one showed in the third picture are about the most text-dense pages in the book. Out of the 400 pages, there are about 26 pages with a mix of text and pictures. All the rest are primarily composed of pictures as showed in other photos of this listing. This is why we are confident that this book could be the best reference book of yixing for any yixing lover who speaks any language. In China, many Yixing fans call this book “the bible of Yixing”, for a number of good reasons: First of all, this book is edited by Gu Jingzhou , the most recent “Godfather” of Yixing. Secondly, this book has more than 500 nice photos of yixing ware (mostly teapots but also including vases, plant pots, and yixing sculptures). Each of them was hand picked and carefully inspected by Gu Jingzhou himself. Many of them are from collection of top-notch museums or the best yixing collectors. I can’t imagine there could be another book with this number and this level of yixing image collection. Thirdly, this book was made in planned-economy era. That’s also why a second book of this level of image collection is not likely to be seen in the current commercialized society. This book was published in 1992. There is a Hong Kong version and a Taiwan version (same contents, different covers). This one is the Hong Kong version by Hong Kong San Lian Publishing House, third print made in 1996. It’s a book that is not rare, but is no longer printed. It’s not wanted by everybody, but those who want it can’t always easily find it. Therefore, we are able to, and would love to, provide it to yixing lovers worldwide, at the best price that we can offer. The page size is about the size of A4 office supply printing paper. The book is big, 400 pages, 5 lb. Due to the years of warehousing and international transportation, we can’t guarantee each copy of the book is spotless new. There might be some small dents at the corners or on the cover. But over all the book looks new, as seen on the pictures of this page. The hard cover of the book also protects it quite well through storage and transportation. This book is from the third print in Hong Kong in 1996. The other one is Taiwan first print. If putting the two books side by side, I somewhat think the Taiwan first print looks better than this Hong Kong third print. But the difference is rather small and I don’t know if it’s a “placebo effect”. The two books are all the same except for the cover and publisher page. I’m not optimistic for getting either print for the same price in future years. Local pick-up option is available during weekend days at locations close to item location.
