Antique Japanese Edo Era (c. 1840) Shunga 12 Hand Painted Erotic Scenes 12' Long
This is an antique Edo era shunga (erotic art) hand painted 12′ long scroll with 12 detailed erotic scenes. Each of the 12 scenes was all hand painted over 180 years ago on silk and laid down on a 12′ long scroll. The ends are silk and gold leaf. The scroll ends are bone or stag horn (see picture 10). Only the highest quality of scrolls use such fine materials in their construction. This scroll is approximately 144″ long by 9″ wide (360 x 23 cm). Each of the 12 scenes are 11 1/2″ long by 8 1/4″ high (29 x 21 cm). Having been rolled up and stored for over a century and a half, with exception to some loss to the lead in gold leaf (see picture 11) it remains in excellent condition. INCREDIBLE Antique Japanese silk Kakeshita furisode hand painted kimono 1920's
Antique hand painted kakeshita furisode. This is an absolutely incredible furisode 100% silk. Fan and floral design – the fan is a symbol of prosperity in the Japanese culture. The design is all hand painted! A kakeshita is a bride’s wedding kimono, with a tiny touch of padding at the hem, as it trails slightly and the padding helps it lie properly, and has furisode style sleeves. This is the last time she will wear a furisode kimono; once married, she stops wearing kimonos with furisode style, deep sleeves. The small hem of the kimono is padded – this is a small padding, not thick like on a hikizuri. Some of the floral design has heavy embroidery on them. Due to the age and delicate nature of this hand stitched kimono there are some defects. There are 3 fans that all have gold couching (One at the Shoulder and 2 at the bottom) but this is in a bad way and is unstitched and hanging off in a lot of places. There are several fairly small tears in the material at the bottom on the left side – see photo. There are 2 small areas that have come unstitched at the seams – see photos 11 & 12. Some areas do have marks on, visible on the cream – like in photo 8. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’d like to see any more photographs! This really is an incredible piece! Kimonos should be worn left over right. Only a Japanese corpse wears a kimono right over left. Kimono’s should not be washed. They should be taken to a specialist dry cleaners. They can be aired outdoors for freshness. WHY CAN SOME WOMEN’S KIMONO BE SO LONG? Contemporary and formal kimono are very long indeed. This is because they are traditionally shortened by hitching up at the waist and hiding the excess fabric behind the wide obi belt. Older kimono tend to be shorter and smaller. Occasionally someone asks me about a matching “belt” or sash for a kimono. Japanese women, instead, wear a kimono with an obi–usually a wide, stiff, brocaded, 15-foot long piece that wraps around the waist several times and ties in an elaborate bow in back. They rarely match these to the kimono, but rather choose contrasting colors and patterns. One must bear in mind that most are vintage items, which I strive to describe accurately and honestly. Most are in excellent vintage condition and therefore look virtually new but all are vintage, even the unused garments, which are or deadstock. A very, very few smell of mothballs or a touch of vintage mustiness but that is rare. This can be aired out and can sometimes be speeded up by tumble drying the dry garment at cool, but it should be put in a pillowcase in the dryer and is done only at your own risk. I have also had success at removing it by turning garments inside out and spraying very lightly with Oust, then letting them hang for a couple of days, but you do this at your own risk, as I cant guarantee it wont damage some fabrics. I found Oust to be much better at it than Febreze, even though Febreze is intended for some fabrics and Oust is an air freshener. Some synthetic textile and cotton kimonos can be hand washed but do this entirely at your own risk and only use a detergent for colours, as all other detergents contain bleaching agents to brighten whites. Storage: Hang up your garment for a few hours prior to wearing, to remove fold creases. They should also be hung out to air 4 times per year, if not worn frequently. The Japanese take great pains to store their traditional garments with the utmost care, which is why they stay in such exceptional condition. Some of my Japanese garments have white stitching (shitsuke) round the outside edges. The Japanese put these stitches in to keep the edges flat during long periods of storage, these stitches just get pulled out before wearing the garment. More Kimonos in our shop so take a look! Authentic Antique Japanese Koshida Hand Painted Satsuma Vase From Meiji Period
I have for sale an authentic, antique, handmade, hand-painted Koshida Satsuma covered vase. The vase dates back to the Meiji period and was made between 1880 and 1912. It has been dated by examining the maker’s mark and the chosen painted design. Both are known attributes conducive to the time period. The bottom is clearly marked by hand with the Shimazu Clan family crest, which is a circle with a cross in it and the Koshida kanji characters. Koshida produced Satsuma pieces from 1880 until approximately 1927. During the time period Koshida was known for making high quality pieces painted by some of the finest artists in Japan. Needless to say, their pieces today are sought after by collectors. It is in mint condition with no damage of any kind. Vase measures: Height: 7″ with lid Circumference: 13″ The vase has all the telltale signs of being authentic. If you are truly interested in owning an authentic Satsuma piece then I strongly suggest you read all of the following. Also please take the time to visit a few of the many informative online Satsuma websites. The more you know the better your chances are of purchasing an authentic original for the right price. First of all, look to see if there is any English words on the marking, such as “Made In Japan” or “Hand Painted”. If there are, then the piece is most certainly NOT an antique. Once the Satsuma style was seen by the general public and became a popular look, the style was mass produced across the world (usually in China) and stamped with these sorts of markings. If your piece has this on, it is probably made in the later half of the 20th century. CHECK FOR THE SHIMAZU FAMILY CREST. Another good sign of an authentic antique mark is the presence of the Shimazu family crest. A simple circle with a cross through it is the sign of the clan that ruled the Satsuma province in Japan around the time that most of the original items were made. If this crest is on the pottery item, then you most likely have an original piece. The crest should also be accompanied by a signature or mark of the maker and is often painted in gold strokes. The Kanji (Japanese symbols) will often be the name of the maker or sometimes a number, placing the piece as one of a series of potteries, designed to be displayed in a certain order. IS THE MAKERS MARKING HANDPAINTED OR STAMPED? All of the original Satsuma pottery pieces were made, glazed and painted by hand. Therefore, you should be able to see if the marking has been painted by hand or stamped on. If a stamp or print has been used to mark the piece, you may have a more modern item – most likely mid to late 20th century and worth less value. Obviously, a stamped mark will look more perfect than a hand painted one, so it should stick out like a sore thumb. One of the obvious differences between porcelain and earthenware pottery is that the former is very thin, which allows you to hold the item and tap it, producing a “ring” sound. You can probably test this on some more modern items you have at home. The fact that Satsumaware is made from clay and earth means that they have generally thicker “walls” and the material will not allow a “ring” when tapped. You can test your Satsuma piece yourself to see if it will produce a high pitched ring when tapped. If you get a dull sound, then you are more likely to have a genuine piece. There are multiple websites with extensive information on maker marks and which artist or factory they belong to. Quality Satsuma pieces were only made in Japan and all the maker’s marks have been identified and catalogued. They are simply hoping to make a sale in an unscrupulous manner. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. The item “Authentic Antique Japanese Koshida Hand Painted Satsuma Vase From Meiji Period” is in sale since Tuesday, October 18, 2016.
