I have for sale a really incredible antique Japanese piece. It features a dragon that is exceptionally formed and highly detailed. The other two had the claw on the right broken off, however, as the photos show it is present on this piece. I believe this was made to hold paint brushes, but it could be used for pens, pencils, etc.. I have to admit I absolutely love this thing. This is one of those rare things I almost pocketed for myself. Size: 4.5″ (Length) 2.25″ (Width) 1.5 (Height). If you have any questions and/or need more photos please send me a message. OLD antique Mid Century ABSTRACT Fine Art OIL PAINTING Japanese or Chinese arts
Up for sale here is a vintage circa mid 1950s to about the late 1960s framed abstract oil painting with gold highlights on canvas that is clearly signed by either a Chinese or Japanese Artist. This artist was most likely working in Europe in the Mid 20th Century as the stretcher bars, which seem to be original are most likely made in Italy or France or an outside chance of being Danish but there was a fairly large Chinese and Japanese population of artists that were working in France in the 1950s. The subject matter of this oil painting appears to be a Harbor Scene with maybe fishing boats. It is tough to tell because the painting is very abstract. The painting’s stretcher bars are in metric size but in United States measurement the painting only comes to 21 1/4 inches high by about 31 5/8 inches. The total size with the thin painted black frame comes to 22 inches by about 33 inches. The painting is signed by the artist in the upper right corner in Asian style characters but we are unfamiliar with both Japanese and Chinese alphabets and signatures so we don’t know who the artist could be. As for condition , this painting was rescued from a Chicago area dealer’s home that caught fire. While many, many works of art were destroyed, many other were saved in various conditions. This piece had a cardboard backer on it and fortunately only a little bit of the back of the painting was exposed to the heavy smoke of the fire.. Along the edge of one stretcher bar. The front of the painting was completely exposed to the smoke. However, we were successful in getting quite a bit of the soot and smoke smell off of the painting and as a result were able to find the signature on the painting, it was originally mixed in with the smoke. There is still a faint smoke odor to the surface though. The frame has many small chips of wood missing and paint missing on the edges that will need to be touched up. There are no holes or tears to the painting but it is going to require a professional painting to really get the piece clean. There are two very tiny paint chips but they blend in with the thick brush strokes on the painting. While we don’t know the artist of the painting, the quality seems to be quite good and it would fit perfectly into a Mid Century Modern decorated home. With a little research you might be able to determine the artist of this painting and have a treasure on your hands. 19th Century Meiji Period Imari Jardiniere Painted with Flowers and Buildings
Imari porcelain originated in the early-17th century in the southern Japanese town of Arita. It is primarily known for its stylized depictions of bamboo, flowers, and geometric designs in blue and white at first, and then later in orange, blue, red and sometimes green. The ware was manufactured specifically for the European export trade near the Japanese port of Imari in the town of Arita, on an island in the south of the country. Today the town hosts an annual week-long ceramics fair that draws a million visitors. As can be said of most finely painted porcelain pieces, the beauty depends upon the talent of the artist as a designer, the skill of the artist as the executioner of his design, and lastly but most important, the artists ability to harmoniously blend all of the elements required in a fine painting. This beautiful jardiniere was obviously done by an experienced and creative Imari artist who knew his art well and also had exceptional talent. Imari was wildly popular from the 17th century until the mid-18th in Europe until Chinese–followed by European–potters began creating their own versions of this pottery. By the last half of the 19th century, however, there occurred a great resurgence in interest in all things Japanese, including Imari, especially after the world Expositions in Paris, Philadelphia and Chicago that took place between 1867 and 1893. This heightened interest by the West was given the name, Japonism, by a contemporary artist, and took place in the midst of great societal changes in Japan. The Meiji period dates from 1868 until 1912, when the emperor of that name died. This jardinière has a distinctive ribbed and bulbous body that is narrower at the top edge, balloons out and then narrows again at the bottom edge; somewhat resembling the shape of a pumpkin. However, it because of this and the profusion of motifs that makes this such a wonderful example. It is decorated in the traditional red and underglaze blue colors with gold highlights of Imari pottery of the 19th century. There are several pots of chrysanthemums depicted on each side. They are separated by small insets of other flowers between buildings. On the top is a narrow band with repeating motifs of flowers and golden fish. On the very top edge of the jardinière, the artist finished the piece with traditional scroll work. This amazing piece of workmanship sits on its own wooden base. This base has five feet that are held around a pierced and fluted wooden design. This attractive stands suits the heavy jardinière quite well for display. The condition of this piece is excellent. It measures about 8 inches in girth at its widest. The top of the jardinière is 6-1/4 inches in diameter. It is 5-1/4 inches high on its own and 8-1/2 inches high including the stand. Personal and cashiers checks also accepted. Expertise in 18th and 19th Century Needlework, British Paintings, and 19th Century Decorative Arts with over 35 Years Experience.
