This is an exquisite Antique Asian Japanese Meiji Calligraphy Ink Painting on paper by Shibahara Gisho or in Kanji, (1885 – 1954), depicting an old rose blossom tree on a rocky mountain outcropping. This work is signed by the artist in the lower right and stamped with his signature red chop mark. This painting dates approximately to the year 1912, in the early Showa period. Approximately 16 3/8 x 21 1/4 inches including frame. Actual visible artwork is approximately 10 x 14 1/2 inches. Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts, Department of Painting in 1905. He studies under Takeuchi Seiho. He became an assistant to Miko in 1907, and later retired as a teacher at the painting vocational school while concurrently serving as a part-time teacher at the painting vocational school in 1930. He lived in Kyoto and learned haiku from Shiaki Nakagawa and Kawahigashi Heki, and made haiga effective. “Street Rain” was selected for the first time in the 4th Bunten Exhibition in 1910, then the 4th Imperial Exhibition “Keiho Sonobayashi” in 1922, and the 5th Imperial Exhibition “Ryukyu” in 1938. 18(1885)29(1954). 38(1905)40(1907)5(1930)43(1910)411(1922)413(1938)5(21)5(1930)116(1931)129(1934)15.
