Antique Japanese Reverse Painting On Glass People Lake Boat Original Frame (#2)
Please note that I will be separately listing two Japanese reverse paintings on glass today. This is an antique Japanese reverse painting on glass of a lake harbor scene. It is in its original frame. Please use your judgment. The overall frame measures 14 3/4 inches high x 18 3/4 inches wide (37.4 cm x 47.6 cm). The painting measures 12 inches high x 16 inches wide (30.5 cm x 40.6 cm). In addition to being painted on the back of the glass, there are also some scattered accent areas with what I believe is either mother of pearl or abalone shell. The wood back is a little loose so the painting moves back-and-forth a little. It seems that if you secure the wood back a little better it will stay in place. I do not like to repair things so I did not touch this. However, I will package it securely to make sure it does not move around. It’s not that big a deal but I wanted to mention it. You can still hang it up the way it is and no one will know the difference! There are some scattered blemishes to the painting. The frame is definitely original and has the original wood backing. However, I believe someone may have painted it over many years ago. It weighs a little over 2 lbs.

THIS LISTING IS FOR A SUPERB REVERSE GLASS PAINTING, PROBABLY JAPANESE IN ORIGIN AND DATING TO THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY. THE DETAIL IS EXCELLENT WHICH DEPICTS A JAPANESE GIRL AND A LITTLE BOY IN A GARDEN SURROUNDED WITH PLANTS, FLOWERS, TREES AND BIRDS WITH A ROOM SETTING IN THE BACKGROUND. ALL IN ALL IN VERY GOOD ANTIQUE CONDITION BUT AS AN ANTIQUE IT WILL CARRY SCARS FROM THE PASSAGE OF TIME AND IS EXPECTED TO HAVE MARKS OR BLEMISHES. BUT I CAN SEE NOTHING OF OBVIOUS IMPORTANCE THAT WOULD DISTRACT FROM THE OVERALL APPEARANCE. THE PAINTING IS CONTAINED IN AN EBONISED FRAME WITH ROUNDED CORNERS AND IS MISSING A PEDIMENT THAT WOULD HAVE FITTED IN THE TOP EDGE, COMES WITH HANGING WIRE AT THE BACK. THE SIZE OF PAINTING IS APPROX. 46.5CM HIGH X 30.2CM WIDE. IN THE UK POSTAL DELIVER IS FREE TRACKED AND INSURED. These have come straight from a house clearance, and as such very little is known about them. Theyre hand painted, and in a relatively good condition. I have made no attempt to clean them and they are slightly sticky – with some light brownish residue around the edges of the glass which suggests they were possibly part of a screen decoration or something similar at some point in their history. The 6 larger ones are portrait sized and the 6 smaller landscape sized. The larger ones measure approx 9.4cms x 24cms and the smaller ones measure approx 7.5cms x 14cms. There is some minor paint loss to some areas, but nothing that really detracts from the overall impression of a rather beautiful collection. Some of the glass edges are a little nibbled, but the only really noticeable area of damage is to the bottom edge of one of the larger panels which has a small piece missing (please see photographs). All of the panels feature Geisha women in the outdoors, surrounded by nature, blossoms, water and outdoor features.
