Very Large Japanese Imari Hand Painted Meiji Period Charger Antique c1890. An exceptional Imari charger example having a quality hand painted finish with an attractive panelled finish with charming scenic scenes throughout. An impressive decorative piece ideal for mantle or table top display. There is what appears to be a manufacturing fault with the dish with a small rim chip being glazed over. This is a very minimal defect and does nothing to detract the piece when on display. Total diameter is 47cm.

Signed Nagasaki School Edo Period Japanese Tiger Scroll Painting
Description – A rare antique Edo period Japanese Nagasaki school scroll painting (kakejiku) of a tiger. The tiger has a comical cat look as tigers are not native to Japan and the general population had never seen one until the circus arrived in the Meiji period. Prior to that the tiger was an imaginary creature to most Japanese, so artists used their imagination to paint what they thought a tiger might look like. It is signed by the artist in the lower right as shown. Age – Edo Period, circa 1603 – 1867. The actual artwork measures 43 + 1/2 inches tall by 18 + 1/2 inches across without the fabric border. The overall frame measures 61 inches tall by 31 inches across. Condition – Age appropriate, it has some areas that will require some restoration, the worst of the condition issues are in the empty space below the tigers paw, see photos for complete assessment. Please ask if additional photos are necessary.
