In Kyoto, he would have one of his most successful woodblock print exhibitions, which garnered his name as one of the top artists in Japan. Since then, Clifton has exhibited his prints widely throughout the world, and today he has become one of the most successful contemporary woodblock print artists. His prints often depict typical old Japanese houses, temples, rooftops, shops, and old town settings of Kyoto using bold lines, patterns, and strong colors. It is a masterpiece of “Kuniyoshi with Mushae” depicting Gosuke, a hero who appears in a yomihon by Kyoden SANTO. The figure with his hand on the sword and glared at him is full of powerful movement that seems to start moving at any moment. This is an original design by Gosuke Nozarashi, who is said to have worn a kimono with a Nozarashi (a spoonful left in the field) pattern, in this picture the skull pattern is made of a cat. 37.2 × 25.5 cm. Because of his unique style, he is called “fantasy painter” and has recently been gaining popularity among a wide range of people.
