For sale is Antique Japanese Satsuma in excellent condition. No cracks or any other damage. The quality of the decoration is reminiscent of high quality Chinese Qing Dynasty Famille Rose pottery. Studios, the complete name of the artist is Okada Gyouzan, ???? . Gyozan also spelled Gyouzan and his studios are very famous and well known for their work with Kiyomizu (old Kyoto) Satsuma. Gyouzan kiln has a history as long as that of Kiyomizu Ceramics (Kyo-yaki). Kyo-Satsuma refers to Awata-yaki which was created for export by Kinkozan Soubei of Awataguchi, Kyoto during the Meiji era. Kyo-Satsuma received high reputation from abroad at the World Expo in Paris. Patterns outlined in gold, flamboyant, yet elegant designs on an ivory base with crackles are characteristic of Kyo-Satsuma. Gyouzan kiln has its origins in the 17th century. Around the beginning of the 18th century, Gyouzan kiln was listed by the Emperor’s family as one of the five fine kilns of Kyoto. Around 1890, Choubei (an Okada ancestor) moved to Gojo Higasiyama to set up his kiln and shop. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Company began to export the reproductions of Ninsei and Kenzan and original Kyo-Satsuma ware under the name of Gyouzan. After that, Gyouzan kiln had orders not only from the USA, but also from European countries. Please study the images as they form a major part of my description and identification. Featuring delicate moriage hand-paintings on an expansive ceramic canvas, this piece will truly be the centerpiece of any area it is put in! A kaleidoscope-like Geisha scene presents on one face of the vase with a myriad of colors, shapes, and textures. The reverse presents a brilliant yet comparatively subdued waterfront floral scene. Although the dense and expressive paintings are the assertive part of this piece, the lovely symmetry and accents in the ceramic add to the overall character. This floor vase was likely made in the early or mid-1900s. It is unsigned but is likely a product of a skilled Japanese kiln. The vase is in EXCELLENT condition. It suffers from no major damage, flaw, or repair. The painting is in almost perfect condition with very few signs of surface wear. There are about three hairlines to the top fluted lip that are subtle yet can still be seen and a few discoloration spots along the lip. Large Vintage Royal Satsuma Hand Painted, Gilded & Beaded Floor Vase that is approximately 23.75 tall and approximately 9 at the widest part of the body and approximately 6.75 across the top. It includes images of peacocks and poppies and various other birds and floral. In very nice condition and the gilding and beading add to the beauty of this piece. The colors are very vibrant with no fading on the painted objects. I have added close ups so you can see the amazing detail of this hand painted vase. In the last photo you can see a very small spot at the base where the paint is missing and can see some fading on the gilding at the base.
