Signed Nagasaki School Edo Period Japanese Tiger Scroll Painting
Description – A rare antique Edo period Japanese Nagasaki school scroll painting (kakejiku) of a tiger. The tiger has a comical cat look as tigers are not native to Japan and the general population had never seen one until the circus arrived in the Meiji period. Prior to that the tiger was an imaginary creature to most Japanese, so artists used their imagination to paint what they thought a tiger might look like. It is signed by the artist in the lower right as shown. Age – Edo Period, circa 1603 – 1867. The actual artwork measures 43 + 1/2 inches tall by 18 + 1/2 inches across without the fabric border. The overall frame measures 61 inches tall by 31 inches across. Condition – Age appropriate, it has some areas that will require some restoration, the worst of the condition issues are in the empty space below the tigers paw, see photos for complete assessment. Please ask if additional photos are necessary.

Of Japanese painting was founded in the early Muromachi period (14th-15th centuries), and was devoted to yamato-e, paintings specializing in subject matter and techniques derived from ancient Japanese art, as opposed to schools influenced by Chinese art, notably the Kano school. Tosa school paintings are characterised by “areas of flat opaque colour enclosed by simple outlines, where drawing is precise and conventional”, with many narrative subjects from Japanese literature and history. However, by the 17th century both Tosa and Kano artists broadened their range, and the distinction between these and other schools became less clear. The Tale of Genji, written by Murasaki Shikibu around 1,000 A. Is regarded by many as the world’s first novel and is arguably the most influential work of Japanese literature ever written, inspiring countless other works of drama, fiction and fine art.
