Meji period cold painted bronze bezique counter with shibayama insert counters. Data is circa 1880. The piece is unmarked with no makers mark detected. Beautifully decorated with cold painted bronze of cranes standing amongst crysthamiums flowers with eight working hinged tabs with shibayama insects. Overall condition is very good, the base stand has a couple of ripples to the bottom rim, all eight tabs are working and fit flush. Approximate measurements are height of 1cm, length of 9.5cm, and width of 5.6cm. Weight of 226 grams.

The paper leaf is exquisitely painted on one side with fish and flora, the reverse is painted with birds and insects amongst fruit, flowers, a table and vases. The guard sticks are finely inlaid in mother of pearl and coloured hardstone with birds and branches of wisteria and other floral sprays. There is a silk tassel attached with a shibayama inlaid ball. The fan measures 27cm high and extends to 48cm in width. Overall in good condition. One inlaid mother of pearl flower lacking on one of the guard sticks and slight wear and marks to the paper folds. We have good chagake as much as possible. Japanese Antique Hand Painted Hanging Scroll. Born in Aichi prefecture, he is a Buddhist scholar and a priest of the Rinzai sect. Other names are Bunmei and Kanshoken. He succeeded the teachings of Kono Mukai. He became a professor of his alma mater, Rinzai Gakuin Collage (present Hanazono University) in 1940, and later served as that of Otani and Hanazono universities. In 1959, he became the chief abbot of the Nanzen-ji branch of the Rinzai Sect and the chief priest of Nanzen-ji temple. At the invitation of the Haynes Foundation, he visited the US nine times and gave lectures on Zen practice at Claremont Colleges and others. A pair of rather beautiful, mother of Pearl inlay, Japanese pictures. The frames are constructed of wood and lacquer, the lacquer being a very dark, brick red ground with floral pattern. The picture board is papier mache with mother of pearl inlaid picture detail depicting Mount Fuji in the distance, lake with sailing boats and two Japanese females in traditional dress to the foreground. Each picture weighs just under 1kg (2.2lbs) unwrapped weight. Any Questions, please ask! Overall, in very good condition given their age. Although impossible to note every imperfection in great detail , there are s ome surface marks and wear here and there on the pictures themselves (see photos) and some lacquer flaked in places on the frames, more so on one frame than the other, however, do display incredibly well and the minor (we feel) imperfections may well be able to be restored if desired.
