This exceptional set of eleven original Japanese erotic shunga paintings dates to the Taisho period and are in excellent condition. They are painted on silk laid to boards and are mounted in a book measuring approximately 14.5″ x 10.5″. The book folds out to display the paintings two to a page and it appears there is one missing so the set originally consisted of twelve. The binding does have issues, most notably the cover being detached, but the ten paintings themselves are virtually perfect. Also having been sealed away and never framed the colors on the paintings are as rich and vibrant as the day they were made. Although the paintings are unsigned it’s obvious from the quality of the work that they were executed by a master of the craft and are exceptionally done in my opinion. They even have a realistic quality to them that may be a clue as to the artist. The vast majority Ive seen were rather cartoony and these are anything but! It truly is rare to find an original intact set of shunga these days let alone one so old and so beautifully renedered.
