Japanese Original Black and Red Ink Drawing Circa 1800 and is a depiction of the Urashima Taro Fairy Tale. I believe that this is a depiction of The Urashima Taro tale, because it features a man sitting on a turtle which is not a common image. This story dates at least to the 8th century and is featured in several literary sources. Urashima Taro is the protagonist of a Japanese fairy tale (otogi banashi), who in a typical modern version is a fisherman rewarded for rescuing a turtle, and carried on its back to the Dragon Palace (Ryugu-jo) beneath the sea. There he is entertained by the princess Otohime[a] as a reward. The thin rice paper has been pasted to another thicker paper. Small loss in corner. Measurements: 32 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches.
