VINTAGE JAPANESE SILK PAINTING “GEISHA TAKING BATH” BY ISHIKAWA KIYOHIKO. The painting depicts a nude geisha girl getting into a bathtub. It is signed by the artist in the lower left corner. This original painting was done on silk fabric that was attached to cardboard on the back side (not glued). It may have been attached to a scroll at one time, I’m not sure. The painting measures about 16 1/2″ tall and 13 1/2″ wide. It is housed in an old wooden frame that measures approximately 17 5/8″ x 14 5/8″. It is an original work of art and NOT a print. His work is considered to rival that of Shinsui and his mentor Kiyokata. This painting likely dates to the 1930’s, when this artist was most active. I haven’t been able to find any other examples of his work showing a nude geisha and consider this sub-genre to be quite rare for him. Condition of this vintage painting is GOOD. It has some minor discoloration spots on the silk. The red artist stamp is present but faded. A larger area of discoloration showing in the lower left is on the cardboard underneath and not on the silk. I would recommend removing the silk and reattaching it to a clean backing and tightening it to reduce wrinkles. The frame is intact but missing some gold paint, particularly on the lower edge. Overall, this collectible silk painting looks very presentable and would make a wonderful addition to any Japanese art collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I’ve provided and judge condition for yourself. Kiyohiko’s work doesn’t come up for sale often and bath scenes for this artist are very rare.
