Sakata Kaido Maru is the common name of Kintaro (Later, Kintoki SAKATA) and was painted in many ukiyoe prints in the Edo period. The combination of the Kaido-maru and a giant carp is a motif of Tango no Sekku (Boys’ Day) decorations, and the idea of Kuniyoshi, which combines the images, is welcomed not only in the Edo period but also in the present day. It is a healthy picture of people wishing for the growth of boys, and it is very popular for the celebration of the first sekku on May 5.
