Sakata Kaido Maru is the common name of Kintaro (Later, Kintoki SAKATA) and was painted in many ukiyoe prints in the Edo period. The combination of the Kaido-maru and a giant carp is a motif of Tango no Sekku (Boys’ Day) decorations, and the idea of Kuniyoshi, which combines the images, is welcomed not only in the Edo period but also in the present day. It is a healthy picture of people wishing for the growth of boys, and it is very popular for the celebration of the first sekku on May 5. Uses (Echizen Seizukihosho) Japanese paper made by Ichibei Iwano, a Living National Treasure. The vivid colors and soft, warm texture unique to woodblock printing are created. A brief sketch of Kuniyoshi UTAGAWA, the founder of the Utagawa school, in the life of SASHU TSUKAHARA, SECYU (provinces of Sashu). “A Brief Map of the Kozu Family” is a series of 10 prints depicting the biography of Nichiren Shonin. This work is believed to depict Nichiren Shonin who was exiled to Tsukahara in Sado. It is unusual for Kuniyoshi to have such a simple depiction that he does not show his eccentric ways, stoically depicting the turbulent life of a great man.
