He was a farmer. His homyo (a name given to a person who enters the Buddhist priesthood) was Gibon, and his go (pen name) was Sentai. He entered the Buddhist priesthood at the age of 11, served as the chief priest of Shofuku-ji Temple in Hakata from 1789, retired to Kihaku-in Temple of the same temple in 1811, and became the chief priest of Shofuku-ji Temple again in 1837, but died of illness at the age of 88 in the same year. He was respected by people of all classes because he was not influential throughout his life. The haiga like ink paintings drawn for edification are rich in original elegance and humor, and have recently begun to attract worldwide attention as representative works of Zen paintings.
