ELABORATE PICTORAL FAMILY SCENE WITH LANDSCAPE ON BOTH FRONT AND BACK WITH BRIGHT COLORATION. ELABORATE GILT ACCENTS ON HANDLE AND SPOUT. SMALL FOO DOG FINIAL ON LID. MEASURES 9 1/2″ HIGH, 8 1/2″ IN LENGTH, 2 1/2 IN WIDTH. WEIGHS 2.5 POUNDS. THE CONDITION IS EXCELLENT WITH NO CHIPS, CRACKS OR REPAIRS. THE ENAMELING AND GILDING ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH ONLY MINOR NORMAL CRAZING AS IS NORMAL ON SATSUMA POTTERY. SATSUMA IS A CREAMY EARTHENWARE USUALLY DECORATED WITH JAPANESE FIGURES WITH EXPRESSIVE FACIAL FEATURES. THIS WARE WAS GENERALLY CREATED FOR THE EXPORT MARKET OF THE MID 19th CENTURY TO CATER TO WESTERN MARKETS.
