RARE Antique Seigaku Gwashu Star Hill Collection Japanese Painting Art Book 1912
ANTIQUE “SEIGAKU GWASHU” (THE STAR HILL COLLECTION) JAPANESE ART ALBUM. Century Japanese art book titled “Seigaku Gwashu” (The Star Hill Collection). The book features high quality reproductions of important paintings in the Kita-in Temple. It has 67 plates reproducing 72 paintings, 7 of which are color wood-cut plates and 60 are black and white collotype plates. The plates are presented in 3 sections with each section preceded by a tissue guard with brief descriptive information in Japanese and English. The 3 sections are: “Pictures of Various Workmen” attributed to Kano Yoshinobu (3 color, 21 black & white plates); “Portraits of the Six-and-Thirty Master Poets” by Matabei Iwasa (3 color, 33 black & white plates); and “Twelve Varieties of Hawk-Pictures” attributed to Kano TannyĆ» (1 color, 6 black & white plates). Five of the Hawk-Picture plates have two images each. The book was published in Tokyo by Shimbi Shoin in 1912 (Taisho 1). It’s rather large and measures about 15 1/4″ x 10 5/8″ (38.7 x 27.0 cm). The book has silk covered boards with a paste-on title on the front board. The cover has beveled edges and the spine is covered in decorated silk cloth. It has purple silk ties and the pages have gold gilt on the top and bottom edges. The book reads Japanese style, back to front. Condition of this antique art album is GOOD. Some of the pages have water staining along the top margin (no staining in the plate areas). The color plates have some light age toning. The silk cover is in great shape with minor wear along the edges. All the tissue guards are intact. I don’t see any handwritten marks inside. Overall, this collectible art book looks great and would make a wonderful addition to any Japanese art library. Please take a close look at the many photos I’ve provided and judge condition for yourself. This particular book is VERY RARE and seldom comes up for sale. See my other listings. For more great items! Forward in English – Water Stains On Top Edge of Some Pages. Beautifully handcrafted gold gilded set as shown in 12 sets of photographs attached. Please browse all 12 sets of photographs for size, weight and condition as they are self explanatory. The set consists of five pieces. A teapot, a cup & saucer trio and a creamer. All pieces have the Noritake Maruki back stamp know as the Komaru Mark with the M for The Morimura brothers, who formed the Noritake company in Tokyo, within the wreath. I also have a matching sugar bowl in this pattern which unfortunately has a hairline crack (and not included in this advert) but its perfectly usable and the damage is only visible from the inside. Noritake china production began around 1876 in Japan. They subsequently opened an export office in New York. In 1904 the Morimura Brothers formed Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd and setup a production facility at Noritake near Nagoya on the Japanese island of Honshu. Rare Antique Japanese Sesshu Toyo Scroll Painting Of Zen Kanzan & Jittoku
Sesshu was a Zen priest known for painting Zen Buddhist pictures, screens, and landscapes. He is the most prominent if not the most famous Japanese painter of the Muromachi period. This ink on paper hanging scroll depicts the duo immortal Zen eccentrics Hanzan and Jittoku(Tang dynasty characters). The Daoist immortal characters are idolized throughout the Asian world. Together they represent the deepest inner meaning of Zen Buddhism as a whole. Sesshu studied and traveled extensively in China, studied the Chinese masters, and completed most of his known and authentic paintings while in China. This particular piece is in the Chinese form that Sesshu studied in his prime. The artwork is titled Cold Mountain , and has two seals. Cold Mountain is one of Sesshu Toyo’s know works. However, since one part of the second seal on the scroll is illegible it is therefore possible that it could be the work of a famous pupil of Sesshu paying tribute to his work. This piece is of the period and in very fragile condition considering the age. This seems to possibly be an early work by Sesshu Toyo or a pupil of the Unkoku School. The scroll measures 62.5 inches by 24 inches. Scroll paintings, created on silk or paper, appear in two formats: handscrolls and hanging scrolls. Handscrolls were originally used to circulate Buddhist texts, with early examples dating back to the Nara period 710-794 C. Though influenced by Chinese culture, they developed into a distinctly Japanese form. Gakan is the term used to refer to Chinese as well as non-narrative handscrolls; Japanese handscrolls are referred to as emaki_illustrated narratives and picture scrolls. To reveal the text or series of scenes on a handscroll, the viewer unrolls it from right to left. , tales of romance, war, and adventure were among the subjects of _emaki. Murasaki Shikibu wrote one of the oldest novels in the world, the Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari), during this period. Such works comprise several handscrolls and were stored rolled. The vertical hanging scroll, or kakemono, is left open and hung on a wall or in an alcove; when not on display it is stored rolled. Though a form of Buddhism, Zen imagery expanded into secular representations such as landscapes, and secular activities served as meditative practice. Tea drinking was a meditative practice of Chinese Chan Buddhism from which Zen derived and was incorporated into Japanese culture. Hanging scrolls were displayed within the teahouse according to season or occasion to create a harmonious aesthetic experience.
