Japanese Satsuma Small Vase Painted Scenes Mark Kozan Antique Meiji 1900
An antique Meiji period small or miniature Japanese satsuma pottery vase that has been finely hand painted with two scenes. One side has a Japanese women and two children, a girl standing and a boy kneeling in traditional dress, sometimes referred to as bijin. The other side has garden scene with peonys a cherry blossom and a flying bird. The base is marked with a gilded mark, which is slightly rubbed but we believe it to read Kozan, which can also translate as Hikariyama. The vase is covered with a deep blue cobalt glaze and decorated with gilded floral and scroll patterns. This is a great example of good quality antique Japanese export Satsuma-yaki or Satsuma ware from the late 19th century dating from around 1900 during the Meiji period. The vase is 3 7/16 inches (8.7 cm) high and 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter, it weighs 103 grammes unpacked. It is in excellent antique condition with some very minor rubbing to the gilding and the usual crazing to the glaze. Please see the images. We have a very similarly decorated vase but very slightly larger with a slightly different shape listed separately. They could arguably be a matched pair.
