Offering a Pair of Vintage Large Ornate Hand Painted Foo Dog Statues with Gold Gilt – 1960. Description: This is a matching mirrored pair of large Foo Dogs. They are a vibrant persimmon colored porcelain ceramic with hand painted gold highlights all over moriage/dragonware decoration. The Foo Dogs are 9 inches tall, 8 inches wide and 8 inches long. Actually, one is a touch over 9 inches and the other is 8-1/2 inches. They are mirrors of each other but were handmade so there are minor differences. One may be the male and the other the female??? Both are in excellent condition and with only minor shelf wear. The Smaller one has a small hairline crack below the right ear that can be seen in the last picture. These came from an estate of a family that lived or visited Japan around 1960. A maker’s mark is on the bottom of each Foo Dog. Foo Dogs may have a Chinese (Chinese guardian lions or Imperial guardian lions – shà sh) or Japanese origin Komainu , often called lion-dogs.
