Rare Antique Japanese Hand Painted Noritake Lustre Ware Eggshell China Tea Set
Rare Highly Collectible Antique Art Deco (1920s) Japanese Hand Painted Noritake Lustre Ware Eggshell Bone China Tea Set In Perfect Condition. Beautifully handcrafted gold gilded set as shown in 12 sets of photographs attached. Please browse all 12 sets of photographs for size, weight and condition as they are self explanatory. The set consists of five pieces. A teapot, a cup & saucer trio and a creamer. All pieces have the Noritake Maruki back stamp know as the Komaru Mark with the M for The Morimura brothers, who formed the Noritake company in Tokyo, within the wreath. I also have a matching sugar bowl in this pattern which unfortunately has a hairline crack (and not included in this advert) but its perfectly usable and the damage is only visible from the inside. Noritake china production began around 1876 in Japan. They subsequently opened an export office in New York. In 1904 the Morimura Brothers formed Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd and setup a production facility at Noritake near Nagoya on the Japanese island of Honshu. They registered their first Noritake back stamp around 1908 and registered their first Noritake mark in the USA around 1911. The company is still operating to this day. Rare Antique Japanese Sesshu Toyo Scroll Painting Of Zen Kanzan & Jittoku
Sesshu was a Zen priest known for painting Zen Buddhist pictures, screens, and landscapes. He is the most prominent if not the most famous Japanese painter of the Muromachi period. This ink on paper hanging scroll depicts the duo immortal Zen eccentrics Hanzan and Jittoku(Tang dynasty characters). The Daoist immortal characters are idolized throughout the Asian world. Together they represent the deepest inner meaning of Zen Buddhism as a whole. Sesshu studied and traveled extensively in China, studied the Chinese masters, and completed most of his known and authentic paintings while in China. This particular piece is in the Chinese form that Sesshu studied in his prime. The artwork is titled Cold Mountain , and has two seals. Cold Mountain is one of Sesshu Toyo’s know works. However, since one part of the second seal on the scroll is illegible it is therefore possible that it could be the work of a famous pupil of Sesshu paying tribute to his work. This piece is of the period and in very fragile condition considering the age. This seems to possibly be an early work by Sesshu Toyo or a pupil of the Unkoku School. The scroll measures 62.5 inches by 24 inches. Scroll paintings, created on silk or paper, appear in two formats: handscrolls and hanging scrolls. Handscrolls were originally used to circulate Buddhist texts, with early examples dating back to the Nara period 710-794 C. Though influenced by Chinese culture, they developed into a distinctly Japanese form. Gakan is the term used to refer to Chinese as well as non-narrative handscrolls; Japanese handscrolls are referred to as emaki_illustrated narratives and picture scrolls. To reveal the text or series of scenes on a handscroll, the viewer unrolls it from right to left. , tales of romance, war, and adventure were among the subjects of _emaki. Murasaki Shikibu wrote one of the oldest novels in the world, the Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari), during this period. Such works comprise several handscrolls and were stored rolled. The vertical hanging scroll, or kakemono, is left open and hung on a wall or in an alcove; when not on display it is stored rolled. Though a form of Buddhism, Zen imagery expanded into secular representations such as landscapes, and secular activities served as meditative practice. Tea drinking was a meditative practice of Chinese Chan Buddhism from which Zen derived and was incorporated into Japanese culture. Hanging scrolls were displayed within the teahouse according to season or occasion to create a harmonious aesthetic experience. Large Rare Antique Japanese Noritake Hand Painted 8/20cm Porcelain Rose Bowl
Large & Very Rare Antique (Art Nouveau) Hand Painted Japanese “Noritake” 8/20cm Porcelain Rose Bowl. Beautifully handcrafted bowl with scenes from the Sahara Desert in Egypt with cobalt blue top band and silver plated rim. There are EPNS (electro plated silver plate) markings to the metal rim and hand painted mark at the base. Please browse all 12 photographs for size, weight & condition. The bowl is damage free without any chips or cracks. The only minor wear is to the gold gilding and silver plating, other than that perfect for its age. Over 100 years old from the Art Nouveau/Edwardian period I’m reliably advised. In 1876, Ichizaemon Morimura VI and his brother Toyo founded Morimura Gumi with the intent of establishing overseas trading by a Japanese company. The company was renamed Morimura Brothers in 1881. By the 1890s, the company had shifted from retail to wholesale operations and started working on design improvements for the pottery and porcelain ware, which had become one third of its business. By 1899, all of the pottery and porcelain decorating factories in Tokyo and Kyoto had been consolidated in Nagoya, and the company started research on creating European style hard white porcelain in Japan. In 1904, key members of this trading company created the Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. (“the Company that makes Japan’s Finest China”) in Japan. A new factory was built in Noritake, near Nagoya (now Noritake-shinmachi, Nishi-ku, Nagoya, Aichi). In 1914 the company succeeded in creating their first Western style dinner set, called “Sedan”, to compete with European porcelain companies. Nippon Toki wares were mostly aimed at the European Market. This forerunner of the modern Noritake Company was founded in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. Most of the companys early wares carried one of the various Nippon back stamps to indicate its country of origin when exported to Western markets. Today, many collectors agree that the best examples of Nippon-era (18911921) hand painted porcelain carry a back stamp used by “Noritake” during the Nippon era. By 1923, Nippon Toki was looking to streamline its paperwork using machines to handle large orders coming in from the United States, and was impressed by the Hollereth tabulating machines manufactured by the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR). In May 1925, Morimura-Brothers entered into a sole agency agreement with CTR (which had been renamed IBM in 1924) to import the Hollerith machines into Japan. The first Hollerith tabulator in Japan was installed at Nippon Pottery in September 1925, making Noritake IBM customer #1 in Japan. It now provides ceramic and diamond grinding and abrasive solutions for many industries. Other products currently manufactured by Noritake, also derived from its core tableware manufacturing technologies, include thick film circuit substrates, engineering ceramics, ceramic powder, and vacuum fluorescent displays, [8] as well as heating furnaces and kilns, mixing technology, filtration systems, and cutting and grinding machines. Although consumers and collectors alike have called the tableware, “Noritake” (and/or simply, “Nippon”) since the late 1920s, the Japanese parent company did not officially change its name to the Noritake Co. Evidently, since Noritake is the name of a place, the company was initially prohibited from registering the name as a trade name.
