A lovely pair of antique Japanese Koransha (Scented Orchid Company) porcelain vases. Painted in underglaze blue with overglaze polychrome enamel decoration and ornate gilding in a vermicelli pattern. On one side is a large reserved cartouche with a river with two large carp swimming near water lilies with branches of acer leaves above. The other side has two cranes flying amongst stylised clouds over the very ornate vermicelli gilded ground. The base has large stylised breaking waves of the sea and the. Rim has gilded stylised cloud scrolls. These beautiful vases are marked on the base with an under-glaze blue orchid mark, they date. Fukagawa ware was and still is. Made in the area around the town of Arita, in the former Hizen Province. Now Saga Prefecture, of N. Orthwestern Kysh island of Japan. The vases are approximately 5 7/8 inches (15 cm) high, 3 2/3 inches (9.3 cm) diameter. They weigh a total of 614 grammes unpacked. They are in excellent antique condition, no damage, some very minor wear to the gilding. Please see the images. They are a highly collectable and very decorative pair and great for display on their own or as part of a collection antique Japanese porcelain or Hizen ware, , Hizen-yaki from a distinguished and highly collected factory.
