Small Japanese Satsuma Pottery Bowl Painted Samurai Mark Hozan Meiji 1900
An antique Meiji period small Japanese satsuma pottery scalloped rim bowl that has been finely hand painted with an image of Japanese Samurai warriors. The base is marked with a gilded lozenge mark on an iron red ground: – Hozan, which can also translate as Takarayama. The bowl is covered with a deep blue cobalt glaze and decorated with gilded geometric, floral and scroll patterns. The inside of the bowl has a central five petal shaped reserved ground for the main decoration. This central cartouche has scene with three samurai clad in armour to the left under a tree, one holding a clan standard or flag, which looks similar to that of the Minamoto or Genji clan mon. He is stood behind another warrior who is mounted on a dappled horse. The horseman has a kuwagata maedate crest to his kabuto helmet, he has a sword at his waist and is holding a bow and has arrows in a quiver on his back. To his left is a third soldier with a sword and spear or pike. To the right of the three samurai are two figures, one a young girl who is leading a man, carrying a long bow, away from the group. This is a great example of good quality antique Japanese export Satsuma-yaki or Satsuma ware from the late 19th century dating from around 1900 during the Meiji period. The bowl is 3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm) diameter and 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) high, it weighs 96 grammes unpacked. It is in excellent antique condition with some very minor rubbing to the gilding and the usual crazing to the glaze. Please see the images. Large Rare Antique Japanese Noritake Hand Painted 8/20cm Porcelain Rose Bowl
Large & Very Rare Antique (Art Nouveau) Hand Painted Japanese “Noritake” 8/20cm Porcelain Rose Bowl. Beautifully handcrafted bowl with scenes from the Sahara Desert in Egypt with cobalt blue top band and silver plated rim. There are EPNS (electro plated silver plate) markings to the metal rim and hand painted mark at the base. Please browse all 12 photographs for size, weight & condition. The bowl is damage free without any chips or cracks. The only minor wear is to the gold gilding and silver plating, other than that perfect for its age. Over 100 years old from the Art Nouveau/Edwardian period I’m reliably advised. In 1876, Ichizaemon Morimura VI and his brother Toyo founded Morimura Gumi with the intent of establishing overseas trading by a Japanese company. The company was renamed Morimura Brothers in 1881. By the 1890s, the company had shifted from retail to wholesale operations and started working on design improvements for the pottery and porcelain ware, which had become one third of its business. By 1899, all of the pottery and porcelain decorating factories in Tokyo and Kyoto had been consolidated in Nagoya, and the company started research on creating European style hard white porcelain in Japan. In 1904, key members of this trading company created the Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. (“the Company that makes Japan’s Finest China”) in Japan. A new factory was built in Noritake, near Nagoya (now Noritake-shinmachi, Nishi-ku, Nagoya, Aichi). In 1914 the company succeeded in creating their first Western style dinner set, called “Sedan”, to compete with European porcelain companies. Nippon Toki wares were mostly aimed at the European Market. This forerunner of the modern Noritake Company was founded in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. Most of the companys early wares carried one of the various Nippon back stamps to indicate its country of origin when exported to Western markets. Today, many collectors agree that the best examples of Nippon-era (18911921) hand painted porcelain carry a back stamp used by “Noritake” during the Nippon era. By 1923, Nippon Toki was looking to streamline its paperwork using machines to handle large orders coming in from the United States, and was impressed by the Hollereth tabulating machines manufactured by the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR). In May 1925, Morimura-Brothers entered into a sole agency agreement with CTR (which had been renamed IBM in 1924) to import the Hollerith machines into Japan. The first Hollerith tabulator in Japan was installed at Nippon Pottery in September 1925, making Noritake IBM customer #1 in Japan. It now provides ceramic and diamond grinding and abrasive solutions for many industries. Other products currently manufactured by Noritake, also derived from its core tableware manufacturing technologies, include thick film circuit substrates, engineering ceramics, ceramic powder, and vacuum fluorescent displays, [8] as well as heating furnaces and kilns, mixing technology, filtration systems, and cutting and grinding machines. Although consumers and collectors alike have called the tableware, “Noritake” (and/or simply, “Nippon”) since the late 1920s, the Japanese parent company did not officially change its name to the Noritake Co. Evidently, since Noritake is the name of a place, the company was initially prohibited from registering the name as a trade name. The item “Large Rare Antique Japanese Noritake Hand Painted 8/20cm Porcelain Rose Bowl” is in sale since Thursday, August 30, 2018.
