ANTIQUE “SEIGAKU GWASHU” (THE STAR HILL COLLECTION) JAPANESE ART ALBUM. Century Japanese art book titled “Seigaku Gwashu” (The Star Hill Collection). The book features high quality reproductions of important paintings in the Kita-in Temple. It has 67 plates reproducing 72 paintings, 7 of which are color wood-cut plates and 60 are black and white collotype plates. The plates are presented in 3 sections with each section preceded by a tissue guard with brief descriptive information in Japanese and English. The 3 sections are: “Pictures of Various Workmen” attributed to Kano Yoshinobu (3 color, 21 black & white plates); “Portraits of the Six-and-Thirty Master Poets” by Matabei Iwasa (3 color, 33 black & white plates); and “Twelve Varieties of Hawk-Pictures” attributed to Kano Tannyû (1 color, 6 black & white plates). Five of the Hawk-Picture plates have two images each. The book was published in Tokyo by Shimbi Shoin in 1912 (Taisho 1). It’s rather large and measures about 15 1/4″ x 10 5/8″ (38.7 x 27.0 cm). The book has silk covered boards with a paste-on title on the front board. The cover has beveled edges and the spine is covered in decorated silk cloth. It has purple silk ties and the pages have gold gilt on the top and bottom edges. The book reads Japanese style, back to front. Condition of this antique art album is GOOD. Some of the pages have water staining along the top margin (no staining in the plate areas). The color plates have some light age toning. The silk cover is in great shape with minor wear along the edges. All the tissue guards are intact. I don’t see any handwritten marks inside. Overall, this collectible art book looks great and would make a wonderful addition to any Japanese art library.
