ANTIQUE 19thC JAPANESE EDO TOSA SCHOOL YAMATO-E WATERCOLOUR SCROLL PAINTINGS
ANTIQUE 19thC JAPANESE EDO TOSA SCHOOL YAMATO-E WATERCOLOUR SCROLL PAINTINGS. An antique Japanese two-section watercolour scroll painting on paper, presented one above the other within a sympathetic mount and frame. The upper scroll section details three Shinto Priests following three flying birds, running towards a building on stilts. The stylised clouds and sky are also typical of the Tosa school Yamato-e. The lower scroll is in a similar style, depicting seated Shinto Priests in front of a gated wall with rockwork and trees. The two are set one above the other, within a deep grey card mount, and framed in a simple gold gilt wooden frame. Framed: 56 cm x 58 cm or 22 inches x 23 inches. Each Aperture: 43 cm x 17 cm or 17 inches x 6 3/4 inches. The paintings are cleanly mounted and framed. The paper scroll sections each display signs of age, with some horizontal splits, from the scrolls being rolled up for so long. The frame is clean and strong.
