Antique SHINOZAKI SHOCHIKU Japanese EDO ERA Calligraphy Painting Hanging Scroll
ANTIQUE AUTHENTIC SHINOZAKI SHOCHIKU JAPANESE EDO PERIOD CALLIGRAPHY HANGING SCROLL FROM 19TH CENTURY. It measures 77 1/2″ x 15 3/8″ (calligraphy on paper 50″ x 11 1/4″) plus another 7/8 at both sides of the bottom including the bone end caps. Shinozaki Shochiku was an accomplished Japanese poet, calligrapher and Confucian scholar during the first half of the 19th century. This calligraphy references “long life and fortitude” from the “Minor Odes” of the Chinese Book of Poetry (one of the Five Classics). It’s signed and sealed on the lower-left side and sealed on the upper-right corner (see photos). The top of the back is also signed and has a partially signed partial label (see photos). This antique Japanese calligraphy hanging scroll is in pretty good condition for being about 170 years old. The calligraphy on paper is in good shape with good detail. The paper sheet has some microscopic lite marks and two creases right above the signature on the lower-left side. The scroll mount has wear, some minor stain spots on the lite blue pigment and some small worm holes/paper loss holes in the outer margin area and edges. The top section of the scroll mount has a few small stain spots and wear on the lite blue pigment mostly near the top edge. The back has some small lite stain spots along with two moderate small stain spots and wear on the brown pigment at the top section. Please see photos for condition. University degree is in Art History specializing in Japanese art, have been collecting Japanese art for 30 years and I’m a retired art museum docent.
