Ekaku Hakuin A Rinzai Zen priest of the mid-Edo period. The founder of the modern Rinzai Zen school. His posthumous name was Shoshu Kokushi, and he was called Kuburin. He attained enlightenment at Shoinji Temple in Suruga. He succeeded to the Dharma of Dokyo Hidan in Iiyama, Shinano, and resided at Shoin-ji. Later he became the head priest of Myoshinji Temple.
