YESTERYEAR ART &&#######xA0; &#######xA0; ANTIQUES. Antique Korean Goryeo Japanese Buddhist Woodblock Painting. Beautiful antique Korean or Japanese, Buddhist, painting or woodblock. Appears to have been recently framed, so I have not removed from the frame to inspect it closer, however, the paper is quite yellow, and appears to be very thin since I see fine wrinkling. Mostly done in black ink, there are pink highlights, along with what appears to be silver metallic detailing. There&#####x2019;s also a three character mark on the top right next to the bird, but I&#####x2019;m not sure what it means or what the significance of it is. The image size measures approximately 9&#####x201D; x 14&#####x201D. Overall including the frame, the piece measures 13 1/2&#####x201D; x 18 1/2&#####x201D; approximately. Thank you for your understanding. Illustrated biography of Ippen Shonin. Lent by Kanko-ji Temple. Published by Yamato-e Doyokukai in 1922. Overall length 31.5cm x width 812cm, paper 31.5cm x 746cm. The paper is generally in good condition. There are some minor foxing. This is a picture scroll depicting Ippen, the founder of the Jishu sect of Buddhism, during his travels to various countries to teach Buddhism. There are two lines of Ippen Shonin E biographies: one compiled by Shokai (Ippen Sho-e) and the other by Sotoshi (Ippen Shonin Engi). The 12-volume scroll (1299) in the collection of Kanki-ji Temple in Kyoto (part of which is in the Tokyo National Museum collection), in which Shokai wrote the text and En’i painted the illustrations, is a national treasure. Japanese scroll of a Daruma, a Buddhist monk who started Zen. It’s drawn on paper with a silk border. The solid paulownia wood storage box comes with it. One end has a broken slat. The scrolls weighted ends are ox bone. This was painted by the artist with sumi ink and a brush. There is no room for mistakes using sumi ink. Only the skill of the artist. Japanese scroll of a Buddhist monk. It’s written using older Japanese from the middle 1800’s or before. My very educated Japanese wife has difficulty reading the older Japanese except the character for “Buddha”. He’s a happy monk about to eat an octopus who has an angry expression on it’s face. At hte onks side are a bottle of sake and other food bowls. It’s painted on silk with a silk side matting. The better scrolls are done on silk. Silk is more expensive but stronger and lasts longer. The weighted ends are ox bone. This was painted by the artist with sumi ink and a brush. There is no room for mistakes using sumi ink. Only the skill of the artist.
