Japanese Aode Ko Kutani Style Porcelain Vase Antique Painted Daruma Meiji 31 cm
A Japanese late Meiji period Aode Ko Kutani style porcelain vase hand painted with a decorative and auspicious scene. Aode which means green style, the predominant colour of this vase, and Ko Kutani or Old Kutani style, a colour palette of five enamels painted in green, yellow, red, purple, dark blue. Which was the original colour scheme used from 1650 until 1730 on the true early old Kutani ware. This style was revived in the 19th century. This baluster shaped vase with a short flared or trumpet neck, is decorated with a continuous landscape scene depicting a deity, possibly Daruma or perhaps a Luohan floating across a river by standing upon a leaf. He is being watched by another sage who is sitting underneath a pine tree and leaning on a staff or cane. There are a number of islands within the scene, each with houses or temples on them. There are other figure within the landscape all depicted as scholars or sages. There are rock outcrops, trees and mountains all within this very decorative large river-scape. Daruma , a Buddhist monk sometimes referred to as Daruma Daishi also known as Bodhidharma – according to Chinese history, a sage from India, In Japan he is reputed to come from Persia, he may be called Bodaidaruma. Bodhidharma is said to have performed the feat of the river-crossing during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Liang (AD 502-49). Luohan are disciples of the Buddha, known as’arhats’ in Sanskrit. They have passed through all the stages of the Path to Enlightenment but remain in the mortal realm as holy figures, rather than attaining Nirvana and Buddhahood, in order to help others and uphold Buddhist doctrine. The neck and base are painted with a geometric diaper and scrolling vine pattern with stylised lappets. The vase is marked in iron red enamel on the base. Kutani, which means made in the nine valleys in the Hygo Province, on the island of Honshu, Japan. The vase is approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm) high, 6 3/4 inches (17.2 cm) diameter at the widest and the base is 4 inches (10 cm) diameter. It weighs 1.15 kg unpacked. It is in excellent antique condition, no chips cracks nor restoration. Some very minor wear to the enamels particularly around the top rim. Please see the images. This is a highly collectable and decorative item and great for display on it’s own or as part of a collection antique Japanese porcelain or Kutani-yaki.
