Up for sale here is a vintage circa mid 1950s to about the late 1960s framed abstract oil painting with gold highlights on canvas that is clearly signed by either a Chinese or Japanese Artist. This artist was most likely working in Europe in the Mid 20th Century as the stretcher bars, which seem to be original are most likely made in Italy or France or an outside chance of being Danish but there was a fairly large Chinese and Japanese population of artists that were working in France in the 1950s. The subject matter of this oil painting appears to be a Harbor Scene with maybe fishing boats. It is tough to tell because the painting is very abstract. The painting’s stretcher bars are in metric size but in United States measurement the painting only comes to 21 1/4 inches high by about 31 5/8 inches. The total size with the thin painted black frame comes to 22 inches by about 33 inches. The painting is signed by the artist in the upper right corner in Asian style characters but we are unfamiliar with both Japanese and Chinese alphabets and signatures so we don’t know who the artist could be. As for condition , this painting was rescued from a Chicago area dealer’s home that caught fire. While many, many works of art were destroyed, many other were saved in various conditions. This piece had a cardboard backer on it and fortunately only a little bit of the back of the painting was exposed to the heavy smoke of the fire.. Along the edge of one stretcher bar. The front of the painting was completely exposed to the smoke. However, we were successful in getting quite a bit of the soot and smoke smell off of the painting and as a result were able to find the signature on the painting, it was originally mixed in with the smoke. There is still a faint smoke odor to the surface though. The frame has many small chips of wood missing and paint missing on the edges that will need to be touched up. There are no holes or tears to the painting but it is going to require a professional painting to really get the piece clean. There are two very tiny paint chips but they blend in with the thick brush strokes on the painting. While we don’t know the artist of the painting, the quality seems to be quite good and it would fit perfectly into a Mid Century Modern decorated home. With a little research you might be able to determine the artist of this painting and have a treasure on your hands.
