This is a superb antique Oriental picture frame, a beautifully hand-painted quality item, dating at a guess to the early 1900s The border is stocky & wide with a lovely hand-gilded sight which is canted (angled) the border has many Chinese symbols of birds, flowers & trees, all the things you would see in the Chinese countryside are all symbolised here Frames such as this were made at the start of the 20th Century & were most probably made for the tourist market, you often find them with a touching photographic image of rural Asian life sch as the one I show in the latter photos There is a beautiful ruby lustre in the background on this frame & the back is a smart gloss ebonised black. Post WWII mid-20th century Jap an ese fine art & watercolor landscape painting. Frame: 15″ Width x 16 34″ Height. Image: 9 14″ Width x 10 12″ Height. For sale is this very nice, post-WWII, mid-20th century, vintage and Minimalist in attitude, signed Japanese watercolor painting on paper of a pair of resting deer. The figuration is absolutely wonderful, being extremely sensitive and delicate, seeming to effortlessly describe the pair of Asian white tailed deer resting on a slope or grassy field. With a minimal use of color and efficient, economic painterly mark-making, the Japanese artist expresses more of the poetic essence of these graceful creatures in nature than in describing their specific features. Essence trumps naturalism here and visual poetry is the driving, determining conceptual force. The background is described with nothing more a few wide brush abbreviated brush strokes using only a cerulean blue wash and a light burnt umber wash. This is Japanese Minimalism at its finest. The watercolor is signed in black ink and has a red ink artist’s stamp on the upper left. A simply beautiful mid-20th century vintage Japanese watercolor painting.
